Board Member Spotlight: Laura Grosvenor
Laura Grosvenor was born and raised in the Lynchburg area and has called Central Virginia home for her entire life. She and her husband, Gene, have two children, Haley and Hayden. Laura has worked within the banking industry for her career and is currently with Truist as a Commercial Banker. For the last six years, we have been fortunate to have Laura on our board of directors. While on the board, she has engaged in our work through service on the Program and Development Committees, serving as Board Secretary, and volunteering as a Table Captain at our annual luncheons.
How did you first hear about Miriam’s House?
I first heard about Miriam’s House after attending one of the annual luncheons back in 1998. What really touched me was listening to a client tell her story and experience with Miriam’s House. It was apparent that the staff provide each client with so much care and support. They were not just about finding temporary housing but about clients finding a place to call home. They give them the tools and support to not return to homelessness.
Why did you choose to volunteer your time and expertise as a board member at MH?
After years of attending the annual fundraising luncheons and learning what Miriam’s House does for families in our community, I chose to be a volunteer. As a volunteer, I saw the impact first-hand of what they do to make a difference in so many lives. I was just amazed and I wanted to get even more involved by serving as a board member.
What are you most proud in regards to the work of MH?
I am most proud of the way Miriam’s House keeps evolving to meet the needs of the community. Each year they add additional programs to help reach more in the community who are experiencing homelessness. They help such a variety of people in crisis.
What is something that you wish more people in this community knew about homelessness or about MH?
I always tell people that MH is just not an organization that finds clients a home. They surround their clients with all sorts of support and encouragement that empowers their clients to not only live but to thrive. The vast majority of the clients they serve never return to homelessness and that is just amazing to me!
Tell us one thing most people don’t know about you?
Most people don’t know that my mom is from England as I do not even have a slight British accent!
