Elizabeth

Elizabeth, a 54 year old woman, was in special education in high school and did not graduate. She attempted and failed the GED five times and then gave up. She struggled to obtain and keep employment on her own due to her learning disabilities. She survived for many years on her husband’s income. When he passed away, she was unable to afford her rent and became depressed, requiring hospitalization. Elizabeth became homeless in fall 2015. She came to live at Miriam’s House in December. She was assisted with obtaining much needed mental health case management and counseling. She also was provided with referrals for healthcare, dental care, an eye exam and new glasses. Elizabeth and her case manager completed the disability appeal process together and worked with Adult Services to obtain medical equipment such as a walker and a shower chair. Because of the severity of her mental and physical disabilities, Elizabeth was prioritized for permanent supportive housing. She is now in an apartment of her own with ongoing rental assistance and supportive services to help her remain housed. Miriam’s House assisted her with furniture and household supplies to help get her started in her new home. She continues to receive services through Aftercare Support.
