Key Member Spotlight: Samantha Carter
Meet one of our newest Key members—Samantha Carter—who joined our unstoppable community of monthly givers in November. We have a big goal to reach 100 Key Members by the end of 2021, and we are so close. Samantha is not only helping us get one step closer to our goal but, more importantly, is helping to ensure that everyone in our community has a safe place to call home. We reached out to Samantha to learn more about her and her generous commitment to support our work to end homelessness through her ongoing gifts.
Tell us a little bit about yourself, samantha!
I am from Washington DC, and I transplanted myself to Lynchburg after graduating from Randolph Macon Woman’s College, currently known as Randolph College. I am married with two wonderful daughters, and I love helping women and children. I have and still continue to give a lot of my time to helping women and children, through my career and my faith community.
There are so many great nonprofits in the community, Tell us what made you choose to support Miriam’s House?
Well, growing up with a single mom, who had three children, she was constantly trying to establish a solid foundation for us. For 14 years of childhood, we moved between family members' homes, due to my mom not being able to financially support all of us on her income as a single mother. So, I know what it is like to have to depend on others to help establish yourself. When I was 14 years old, my mother was able to financially support her own living arrangement and has been able to do it ever since. So, supporting Miriam’s House is a personal commitment of mine to pay it forward to mothers with children who are trying to establish or reestablish their sense of security, by having their own place.
Why do you choose to give monthly?
Just to make sure that I am a part of the solution, putting “my money where my mouth is”, so to speak. I want to make sure that I am involved, and being part of The Key makes me feel good knowing that I am helping some young man, young woman, and/or a mother and her children, every month, in some way, reach their goal.
Anything else you would like to share with the broader community to inspire them to join The Key?
I believe it is truly our calling to our fellow man and woman to be a helping hand, especially to the communities most vulnerable. Joining The Key, no matter the donation size, is beneficial and life changing, and the moment you decide to join, you have created a stepping stone for a family to secure their future. By joining The Key you are helping to secure not only key resources to an individual/family, but you are securing the key to a child’s possible future. That’s why I joined!
Finish this sentence: “When not helping to end homelessness in Lynchburg, I can be found…”
Helping my husband run his business, and planning fun things for my daughters to do every Saturday!
Members of The Key, like the Samantha, have committed to financially supporting Miriam’s House through a donation amount of their choosing. This support ensures that hundreds of homeless families and individuals are given not only the physical key of a home but keys to independence, opportunity, and safety. Samantha, along with this transformative group of givers, is empowering individuals and unlocking homes and hopes for our most vulnerable neighbors, and we are so grateful.
